Jhunjhunu

Jhunjhunu is the largest town of Shekhawati and thus, qualifies as it’s capital. Jhunjhunu has numerous beautiful temples and havelis. Founded in the middle of the 15th century by the Nawabs of Kaimkhani and then in 1742 taken over by the Rajput ruler – Sardul Singh. Jhunjhunu is located a 180 km from Jaipur and 245 km from Delhi. The town is famous for the frescos on its grand Havelis, a special artistic feature of this region.

The Britishers formed and stationed their Shekhawati Brigade here in 1830s. The main reason to form this brigade was to stop the petty thieves and dacoits in this area. These were actually the small rulers who had taken to thieving to survive. Western influence is very visible in mostly all the havelis in Jhunjhunu. With The Modi Haveli showing a lady sitting in front of a gramophone, the Kaniram Narsinghdas Tibrewal Haveli (1883) showing a goods train with livestock crossing a passenger train. Floral motifs in Muslim style can be seen in Narudin Farooqi Haveli while the Mohanlal Ishwardas Haveli has the legends of Krishna.

Other attractions include the small Khetri Mahal or the Wind Palace (1770) with its beautiful arches; the Bihariji Temple (1775) for its lovely Ramayana murals and the Mertani Baori - one of the best step-wells in the Shekhawati area. Other places worth visiting include – Badalgarh Fort, Jorawargarh, Kamruddin Shah ki Dargah, Birdi Chand ka Kaun, Ajit Sagar and a Jain temple.

Jhunjhunu is easily approachable by train and road from Jaipur and Delhi. It has decent accommodation to stay and is an ideal base to stay while exploring the Shekhawati region. Check hotels
