Chail
Camp
Chail Code N0- AT-HP19
Enroute
to the frontier of civilisation in the Himalayas and back, the
Banjara Camp at Chail is a welcome break, a transit camp, if
you like. At 2,000m, Chail is just 45 kms from the state capital,
Shimla. Another picturesque, thickly forested tract of
land, Chail owes its allegiance to the Maharaja of Patiala who
wanted to build his palace on a hill from where he could look
down at Shimla. Chail is a few hundred meters higher, and so
suited him perfectly.
The maharaja's palace, build on the lines of a Georgian mansion,
is today a hotel that combines old world splendour with modern
comforts.
Chail, with its carpet of lush green meadows, is also famous
for the world's highest cricket pitch. And, while from one side
of Chail, you can see the twinkling nights of Shimla, from the
other side you get a view of the highest peak in this region
of the Himalayas, Choor Chandni, which literally means 'the
mountain of the silver bangle'.
