Hotel De 'l Orient Pondicheery

Hotel De L'orient - Amongst the many styles of architecture of the various Neemrana ‘non-hotel’ Hotels is the Hotel de l’Orient – an 18th century French home that has been lovingly restored. It is a fine example of indigenous French architecture with high ceilings and pastel walls surrounding a courtyard of domestic proportions. Wherever possible, the old Chettinad plaster has been retained. Similarly the red oxide flooring was repaired in parts but not replaced. The period rooms dating back to the 18th century – now all air-conditioned, have been refurbished with fine pieces of collector’s art and furniture in a contemporary, uncluttered feel. Named after former French possessions in India, each room has an object symbolizing the region in which the French-occupied town was in.

Art treasures, French colonial beds, chests of drawers, intricate study tables, planters chairs (“Pondicheriennes”), interesting lamps and objects, French engravings, etchings, aquarelles, lithographs from the 18th and 19th century, and several Indian oleographs revive an authentic scent of the old French lifestyle in India, making it the ideal choice for discerning directors that endeavour to portray a history.

The premises offer opportunities for outdoor shots without any external disturbances and vast opportunities for creative directors who can adapt their locales with an inventive imagination.

Neemrana's time machine now takes you down south to another Indian time warp. When a comptoir of les Indes caught the imagination of the whole Occident. When the Orientalists painted picturesque landscapes and portraits of a colorful people as yet uncaptured by the camera.

Dining

The French presence in Pondicherry has left many a mark on the culture of the place, its architecture, and cuisine. A very interesting and subtle blend of South Indian and French culinary art produced the “Creole” cuisine which is served in Hotel de l’Orient. The recipes were passed on to the Chef by old Pondicherrian families and feature a mix of sea food, meats, vegetables and rice, all prepared with the right spices and touches.

A second dining-room is called “Carte Blanche”, which is a light-hearted reference to the old maps (called ‘cartes’ in French) of South India, hanging on the walls.

Broadly, we serve Continental and Creole cuisine with a few seafood dishes, to suit a range of tastes and palates.

The meats and sea-food are procured on a regular basis. We prefer not to deep freeze our foods for long durations or for non-seasonal offering. Should you desire to taste a special dish or have a particular preference, you can certainly make a request at the previous meal, and the chefs will try and please you.
