Bal Samand Garden Retreat
Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
Jodhpur, erstwhile capital of the kingdom of Marwar, had a chequered history replete with tales of valour, strife, romance and culture. The city was founded by Rao Jodha, Chief of the Rathore clan of the Rajputs in 1459 who shifted there from Mandore. He built the first structure of the majestic Mehrangarh Fort, towering over the city from atop a 150m cliff, which several generations added to, making the Fort a sprawling edifice that grew in size and stature over time. Rao Jodha also fortified the old city which is surrounded by a 10 km high stone wall along with eight gates.

In the early 16th century, Rao Jodha's descendant, Rao Ganga Singh and Rana Sangha, the great warrior king of Marwar were enjoined in a battle against the invading Mughal Emperor Babar. While this and many other battles and skirmishes continued over successive years, a tentative truce was called during the reign of Babur's grandson Akbar. While its location in the trade routes made it a major trading centre in the 16th century, present-day Jodhpur is best known for the skills it honed and retained in its textile, crafts and furniture traditions.

Owned by the royal family of Jodhpur,it represents an epitome of heritage luxury that caters to the holiday maker as well as the business traveller with equal elan. It is surrounded by lush orchards of fruit trees laden with guava, papaya, lemon and wild berry. Verdant gardens are encircled with flowering plants and exotic birds.Spacious and comfortable accommodation with open courtyards ensure a pleasant stay.

Mehrangarh Fort
The Mehrangarh Fort, atop a rocky hill overlooking the city, was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459. The fort has been impeccably maintained and it would be difficult not to be amazed at the sheer size and solidity of it. The museum houses several interesting collections including one that of palanquins.

Jaswant Thada
Close to the fort is Jaswant Thada, the marble cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, built in his memory by his son Maharaja Sardar Singh.

Maha Mandir
The 100 pillared Maha Mandir Temple is intricately carved with figures depicting yoga postures.

Mandore Gardens
Mandore was the former capital of Maharajas of Marwar and is located about 5 miles north of Jodhpur. Here you will find the dewals, or cenotaphs, of Jodhpur's former rulers. Unlike the usual chhatri-shaped cenotaphs typical of Rajasthan, they were built along the lines of a Hindu temple. They are four stories high, with fine columns and an elegant spire, all in red sandstone.

Guda Bishnoi
Discover a world of tribal colour and rustic cultural grandeur in Guda Bishnoi Village located at a distance of 25-kilometers from the main Jodhpur city.

Picnic near the tiny manmade lake located in the Guda Bishnoi Village and see migratory birds stop here and drink water. Marvel at the floral variety that flourishes in this barren land

Ossianji Temples

The temples here are among the earliest of all medieval temples of Rajasthan. Ruins of several temples dot the present day Ossian. The earlier temples are almost like miniature shrines, some only eight feet in height. Among these intricately carved red sandstone edifices, three are dedicated to Harihara- or the union of Vishnu and Shiva. Profusely carved from their raising plinths, pillars and right upto the very pinnacle of the spires, these temples are considered architectural masterpieces.

Surrounding Areas
Jodhpur, the second largest city in the state of Rajasthan, after Jaipur, lies on the brink of the Thar Desert. Its climate certainly follows the desert pattern of dry hot summers with soaring temperatures and extreme biting wintery nights. However, the evening temperatures in summer drop considerably and make nights much more pleasant and during the winters, the sun makes for crisp bright days. A fair amount of rainfall in the months of July and August ensure that the catchment areas in and around the city fills up and the city remains fairly green
