Kerala offers a unique mini-canvas to the traveler; the backwaters, which consist of a complex network of lagoons, lakes & canals. Life on the backwaters is entirely different; water being the key to everything. There are no roads here, only waterways. On the banks one can see lush green rice fields spreading away into the distance and coconut groves with the occasional temple or church.
These canals or waterways vary in dimension from being wide enough to be dubbed lakes, rich with marine bounty. To being nothing but snaking silvers of freshwater. And are mainly concentrated around the townships of Alleppey, Kumarakom, Kottayam, Quilon and Cochin .
The backwaters are best experienced while slowly punting down the labyrinth of canals in a traditional thatch-roofed houseboat, known as 'Kettuvallom'. An experience you will savour for a long time.
The houseboats are renovated cargo boats? kettuvalloms? and are provided with all modern conveniences and comforts to make your stay a pleasant experience. To complement the traditional way of rowing using large poles, outboard engines are also provided. The boats are designed to facilitate a most eco-friently functioning.

A wide selection of beautiful routes is available for the cruises and you can choose one that suits your budget and time frame. Each route is comprehensive, serene and enjoyable in itself, extending to you a complete experience of Kuttanad... the unique water land of Kerala .
A boat ride into the countryside offers a close look at rustic village life- skiff-fishermen launching their cockleshell boats, large flocks of domesticated ducks waddling down to the water from thatched houses on the banks. Women, neck-deep in water, with their waist-length hair heaped in a crown, catching fish with their feet, aimless cattle grazing in lush pastures, white lotuses floating here and there in small, shallow ponds.

The traditional house boat, the indispensable part of the picturesque backwaters of Kerala, was mainly used in Travancore and Kochi and in the Minicoy Islands in olden times.

The wood commonly used to make Kettuvalloms is 'Anhili', which is found in abundance in central Travancore area. Large planks are tied together using hand made coir ropes and beaten coconut fibres.
This gives the Kettuvalloms enough strength to withstand heavy waves in the sea. These long cargo boats are a familiar sight on the backwaters. These traditional house boats undoubtedly form one of the most abiding images of the backwaters in Kerala.
Today, these goods carriers have been adapted to make the most exciting tourism product in India , the luxuriously furnished house boat. Kettuvalloms or the 'house-boats of Kerala' dot the serene palm-fringed backwaters of Kerala.

Witness the Making of the Traditional Kettuvalloms
At a quiet spot just outside the small town of Karunagappally , 23 kms north of Quilon; it's possible to watch the construction of traditional Kettuvalloms. Kettuvalloms are built entirely without the use of nails.
It requires great skill and adroitness to construct these giant boats by tying huge planks of jack wood together. The boats are applied with fish oil and cashew nut oil and left to cure for days.

Oil is simultaneously applied at least three times before the boat is set on water. Each jack wood plank is joined to the next with coir rope, and then the whole is coated with a caustic black resin made from boiled cashew kernels. With careful maintenance, they last for generations.

A sojourn in Kettuvalloms, the House boats of Kerala, offers a panoramic view of one of the most picturesque aspects of the God's Own Country. One can cruise in it through the palm-fringed backwaters, throughout a night in waxing moonlights.

The lullaby of the waves and the dazzling delights of the moonlit night can be experienced by spending a couple of nights aboard the Kettuvallom. The traditional houseboat of Kerala is one of the most enduring images of the backwaters.
These houseboats are converted version of the "Kuttanadan Kettuvalloms".
