Rourkela

FAMOUS for the Steel Plant, Rourkela has the beautiful Indira Gandhi Park and with a zoo. The Hanuman Batika in the centre of the city is also added attraction. It is the most convenient base for visiting other interesting places in Sundargarh district.

Do not fail to visit Vedavyas, a picnic spot on the confluence of two rivers. It is also a place of pilgrimage, 9 km from Rourkela. There is a dam at Mandira, which offers boating facilities. Darjeeng is a picnic spot on the river Brahmani. Nearby is Deodarh. A gorge on the river. It is 51 km from Rourkela on National Highway No. 23. About 180 km from Rourkela, Junagarh has a fort of historical and archaeological importance with ancient caves. Another haunt of the tourists is the Mirig Khog Waterfall, a picnic spot, 111 km from Rourkela. The 244 mtrs. High Khandadhar is the loveliest waterliest waterfall in Orissa. 114 km from Rourkela via Bonaigarh, it offers a delightful refreshing sight.

How to get there : Rourkela has direct trains from New Delhi, Calcutta, Bombay, Chennai, Bokaro, Tata, Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur and Puri. It is 470 km from Bhubaneswar and 192 km from Sambalpur by road.

Places to visit

Vedavyas

Situated on the confluence of the rivers Sankha and Koel, Vedavyas is not only a place of natural beauty but also considered a ‘Tirtha’,a place of religious sanctity. A vedic Ashram and a school on the lines of Gurukula Ashram are the added attractions of the place. An ideal picnic spot, it is 5 kms from Panposh.

Junagarh

A fort of historical and archaeological importance with some ancient caves having marks of tantra worship. It is 4 kms. from Hemagiri and 15 kms from Kanika.

Rajgangpur

Famous for its cement factory.

Pitamahal

Famous for a small Dam project and ideal for outing.

Ushakothi

47 kms from Sundargarh, the rock-cut caves contain some pictographic writings which are yet to be deciphered.

Mandira Dam

Known for the Dam across the river Sankha, constructed for supply of water to Rourkela and other places in the vicinity. It presents a picturesque sight ideal for holidays and picnic. Boating facility is available in the lake on prior arrangements with the Dam authorities. Permission to enter the Dam site is issued by the Officer-in-Charge at the main entrance.

Khandadhar

244 metres in height, the waterfall at Khandadhar is said to be the loveliest waterfall in Orissa and it is nice picnic spot.

Darjeeng

On N.H.No.23, it is a beautiful place on the river Brahmani, ideal for picnickers. 2 kms away, approachable on foot is Deodarha, a gorge on the river.

Ghogar

A gorge on the river Ib, extending over 5 Kms., it is popular as a picnic spot . A naturally formed Siva Lingam of black granite duly worshipped by the local people is an additional attraction.
