The
distinctive architectural traditions of the Ladakh region
constitute one of the most significant aspects of this
divine land. In tandem with the cultural landscape of
Ladakh, the structural design of Lha-Ri-Sa is traditional
and soothing to the eyes. The local material used in its
construction (wood, stone, adobe) splendidly reflects
the environment around. The flat-roofed construction reflects
the rainless climate of Ladakh. IT's further complemented
by the kitchen garden and plenty of natural spectacles
that are visible from all rooms and suites. Of Ladakh:
Ranging from small nomad shelters in the pasture-lands,
hamlets perched in near-inaccessible mountain reaches,
farmhouses in village clusters, to the large number of
imposing and sensitively sited monasteries, hermitages,
forts and palace complexes, all these traditional buildings
provide important lessons in terms of their climate- responsiveness
and sustainable 'green' building techniques for the modern
buildings in Ladakh today.
|
Although
vastly different from each other in terms of history,
function, scale, location and innumerable other factors,
all these various types of traditional buildings exemplify
a uniquely 'Ladakhi' sensitivity and resilience to the
exigencies of a harsh climate and remote location through
their spatial configuration, built, form and architectural
vocabulary. Though linked to the buildings of other Himalayan
areas such as Tibet, Lahaul-Spiti, Bhutan, Sikkim, with
much in common with them in terms of the building materials
and techniques, the architecture of Ladakh evolved on
its own unique trajectory.
