Kumbhalgarh,
an imposing fort built in 1458 AD set amid massive ramparts
and surrounded by hundreds of temples, the creation of one
of Mewar’s legendary heroes Rana Kumbha and the birthplace
of the legendary warrior of Mewar Maharana Pratap. This fort
was the second-most important fort for the Maharana’s of Mewar,
the famous erstwhile rulers. Today, the wall encompassing
the fort is known to be the second -longest wall after The
Great Wall of China. The fort has seven grand gates and ramparts,
one within the other. Rounded bastions and soaring towers
add to its grandeur. The last gate or the Nimboo Pol has fascinating
chambers within. There is an array of old palaces within the
fort and Badal Mahal, the highest of all the palaces offering
glorious views of the countryside. Built by Rana Kumbha in
the 15th century, it has beautiful apartments painted with
pastel-coloured murals.
Kumbhalgarh,
along with five other forts in Rajasthan was recognized by
UNESCO as World Heritage Site in June 2013. Quite astonishingly,
there are around 360 ancient temples, as well as palace ruins,
step wells, and cannon bunkers inside it.
Entry
to the fort is open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily. There’s
an interesting sound and light show at 6.45 p.m. everyday
at the fort which is a highlight of Kumbhalgarh experience.
