Nestling in the
foothills of the Himalayas, the Corbett National Park has extremely varied
topography and vegetation. This gives it a rich diversity of habitat and natural
beauty. Flat valleys are interspersed with hilly ridges and the Park's rolling
grasslands known as the Chaurs provide visitors with an excellent view of the
animals.
The Ramganga
River flows through the entire length of the Park and little forest streams
tumble through the ravines. While dense stands of sal cloak the higher ridges,
mixed deciduous forests are found throughout the Park. There are over 110
varieties of trees, 51 species of shrubs and over 33 kinds of bamboos and
grasses.
Corbett has a
good tiger population. It was here that the "Project Tiger" was
launched in 1973. Four species of deer - hog deer, sambar, spotted deer and
barking deer and other prey like wild boar, support the predators. Besides the
tiger, Corbett is a haven for 50 mammals, 580 kinds of birds and 25 reptile
species. The Park has elephants, the Himalayan black bear in the higher
elevations, sloth bear, varieties of lesser cats and an entire spectrum of
colourful birds, pheasants, jungle fowl and the Indian hornbill.

National Park is situated in India's Kumaon region starting at the
foothills bordering Garhwal in the west. Located in the terai region of
Uttar Pradesh. Corbett National Park is 260 km. from Delhi, 90 km.
from Kathgodam, 85 km. from Nainital & 6 km. from
Ramnagar.
Best time
to visit : November to June

meet the local naturalists who have lived in harmony with the wilds, letting
you experience the life in the jungles of terai.

Accommodation |
Tiger
Camp is located on the eastern periphery of Corbett National Park
surrounded by thick jungles on one side and river Kosi on the other.
Tiger
Camp offers ten cottages and ten tents. Four cottages of 12'x12' living
area & six cottages of 14’x16’ living area are equipped with a
double bed, coffee table, chairs, clothes rack, mat flooring etc. Each
cottage has an attached western style toilet, sink and hot shower.
Each tent
is equipped with a double mattress, fresh linen and blankets, etc. The
tents have a separate unit consisting of western style toilets, sinks and
hot showers.
A ‘Gol
Ghar’ restaurant where Indian, Continental and Chinese cuisine are
served. A stand-by generator. Folk music and dance on request for groups.
An outdoor garden with lounge chairs and sunshades allows you to stretch
out and enjoy the scenery.
Meals
You can
have your meals in the ‘Gol Ghar’ which accommodates 26 people at a
time and serves a fixed menu at fixed times. The usual menu includes
American breakfast, Indian lunch and Indian, Continental or Chinese
dinner.

Clothing |
Between
November and February, the day temperatures average 24°C. Therefore,
T-shirts, full length jeans, light trekking shoes, stockings and sun
glasses will keep you comfortable. The night temperatures fluctuate
between 3 and 9°C and it is advisable to wear woollens.
Between
March and June, the day temperatures average 36°C. Summer wear and khakis
will keep you comfortable. The night temperature fluctuates between 17
and 24°C and it is advisable to get adequate clothing.
Sometimes, depending on
the weather in the neighbouring hills, it rains in the afternoon and if
you are out in the open an umbrella/rain cape comes in handy.

Activities |
Activities
at Tiger Camp are organised around the spirit of the terai. If you
plan to organise your own itinerary, you have the following options.
Wildlife
viewing in jeeps: The standard procedure of viewing wildlife or tiger
tracking is in open jeeps. Each jeep safari into the jungle lasts for 3
hr. approximately and can seat upto four persons comfortably. Besides the
visitors, the jeep has an expert driver and a nature guide. One can take a
morning and / or an afternoon safari. Cost per jeep per safari: $ 30.
Entrance fee: $ 8 per person per safari.
Elephant
safari: The elephant safari is sometimes rewarding when used for tiger
tracking in the grasslands. One can avail an elephant ride by reaching the
elephant station early as prior bookings are not entertained. To get to an
elephant station, one has to take a jeep into the jungle which is the same
as the jeep safari given above. One can take a morning and / or an
afternoon safari. Cost per jeep per safari: $ 30. Entrance fee: $ 8 per
person per safari. Elephant ride: $ 7 per person.
Bird-watching
in jeeps: One can use a jeep safari for birding within the
jungle. One can take a morning and / or an afternoon safari. Cost per jeep
per safari: $ 30. Entrance fee: $ 8 per person per safari.

Bird-watching
on foot: One
can use a number of good birding trails in the radius of 25 km.
One can take morning and afternoon walks in the nearby foresed
areas and river beds. Cost per guide for full day: $ 30. Vehicle
hire: $ 60 for full day.
Nature
walks and short treks: along the river Kosi or Ramganga.
Cost per guide per hour: $ 5.
Angling:
One can use a few good pools in river Ramganga for Mahseer
fishing. One can take morning and afternoon walks by the river for
angling. The anglers are required to carry their own fishing gear.
Cost per guide for full day: $ 30. Vehicle hire: $ 60 for full
day. Fishing permit: $ 4 per rod per day.
Himalayan
Excursion: Early morning excursion by jeep to Bhuwankhal to
see the snow clad rugged mountain scenery and to experience
Himalayan countryside. Vehicle hire: $ 50 for 5 hr.
