Camel’s Back Road has got its name from the mountain outcrop that has the shape of a camel’s hump. Beginning from Kulri Bazaar, it covers nearly 3 kms stretch that ends at the Library Bazaar. One can take a leisurely walk or a horse ride while enjoying the picturesque Himalayan view. Midway on this road is a beautiful cemetery.
Cloud's End
Located at the edge of a cliff, this is one of the first four buildings of Mussourie. Built by an Englishman in the 1830s, standing here gives you the impression of being at the end of the clouds owing to the cliff-edge location. Now a Heritage Hotel, it gives the most magnificent view of snow-covered Himalayan peaks & the Yamuna flowing through the Doon Valley. 8 Kms from the western end of Mussourie, this bungalow (now heritage hotel) is surrounded by dense forests.
Lal Tibba
Lal Tibba, the highest peak in Mussourie with its original name being Depot Hill, offers an unparalleled view of the Himalayas on a clear day. A must visit for all the tourists to Mussourie, this is the best spot to get a view of the snow covered mountains.
Gun Hill
Gun Hill is the second highest peak of Mussoorie and has acquired this name as the cannons were placed on this hill for the defense of Mussourie. It overlooks the Bunderpunch, Srikantha, Pithwara and Gangotri ranges of the Himalayas and has a number of tourist-points from where one can catch a nicer glimpse of the Himalayan scenery. A number of shops, eating joints on the way add the picnic-feel to the whole visit. It can be reached by road as well as by the Ropeway ride, which is a distance of 400 meters.
Happy Valley
Happy Valley has a small Tibetan temple constructed by the Tibetan refugees and one of the first Tibetan temples built in India. It is on the far west side of Mussoorie and a pleasant walk. As one approaches the place, one can see the place decorated with prayer flags. There is a small Tibetan colony and one can find authentic Tibetan handicrafts for sale.
Kempty Falls
One of the most popular tourist spots of Mussourie, Kempty Falls is one of the biggest waterfalls in the area. At an altitude of 1,370 meters, the Kempty Falls are 15 kms from Mussoorie on the way to Yamnotri.
Bhatta Falls
Though smaller than Kemty Falls, the Bhatta Falls are equally beautiful and less crowded offering a much serene environment to visit. At a distance of 10 kms from Mussoorie with 7 kms by bus/car on the Mussoorie-Dehradun Road & then 3 kms on foot, it is worth a visit.
Jharipani Fall
These beautiful falls are located 8.5 kms from Mussoorie on Mussoorie-Jharipani road and one has to go 1.5 kms on foot from Jharipani.
Lake Mist
This is a newly developed tourist spot, which provides hotels and restaurants. It is a good picnic spot and has boating facilities available on the beautiful lake. Fairly close to Mussoorie, it comes 5 kms before the Kempty Falls on the Mussoorie-Kempty Road.
Company Garden
Company Garden is situated at a distance of 4 kms from Mussorie and is a popular picnic spot. The Garden has an artificial lake with boating facilities and offers dining places and antique shops. Tourists get to pose and get their photograph clicked in the traditional attire.
Children’s Lodge
Children’s Lodge is the highest peak of Mussoorie near Lal Tibba, and offers an exhilarating view of the snow clad mountains. 5 km from the Tourist Office, it is reachable on horseback or on foot.
Landour Bazaar
This is almost 150 year old bazaar that served as a place of recreation for British soldiers. It has the feel of old-bazaar and is bustling in its own way with both old and new shops selling almost everything. This mile-long bazaar has several silversmiths, well-known for their silver nose rings, earrings, bracelets and anklets.
Mussoorie Lake
This lake with boating facilities, offers the most spectacular view of the Doon Valley. Situated 6 kms away on the Mussoorie-Dehradun highway, it is quite accessible and a fun place to visit.
Vinog Mountain Quail Sanctuary
Established in 1993, this bird sanctuary is spread over an area of 339 hectares and is 11 kms from Mussourie. It is famous for the Mountain Quail (Pahari Bater), a bird species thought to be extinct and last spotted in 1876.
Dhanolti
Located 24 kms from Mussoorie on the Mussourie-Tehri Road, Dhanolti is the perfect place to unwind, go for long walks in the wooded hills, enjoy a breathtaking view of the hills and plains.
Nag Devta Temple
This ancient Shiva temple is 6 kms before Mussourie, on the way up from Dehradun on the Cart Mackenjee Road. Visitors include both local devotees and tourists.
Surkanda Devi Temple
Surkanda Devi temple is of great religious significance and also offers a beautiful Himalayan view. An annual fair takes place on the occasion of Ganga Dussehra in the months of May-June. Located on Surkanda Peak, 33 kms from Mussourie on the Mussoorie-Tehri Road, it can be reached via Kaddukhal village from where one has to trek 2 kms uphill.
Bhadraj Temple
Devoted to Lord Bal Bhadraj, brother of Lord Krishna, the temple offers a good view of the surrounding hills. Located on the extreme western side of Mussoorie, this is an excellent trekking spot. It is visited by local devotees and tourists.
How to Reach
Mussoorie, 290 km from Delhi and 35 km from Dehradun is conveniently connected by road. There are direct buses from Delhi to Mussoorie operated by state transport services and private operators, besides the private taxis favoured by majority of travellers. Buses ply at regular intervals from Dehradun to Mussoorie. There are regular bus services from various metros and other tourist destinations in Uttaranchal as well as from outside the state.
Mussoorie does not have a direct rail link. Dehradun railway station serves for Mussoorie too. This station is linked with superfast trains to other major cities in country. The overnight Mussoorie Express links Delhi to Dehradun, the railhead for Mussoorie. Taxis and buses are easily available at the railway station for Mussoorie.
The nearest Airport, Jolly Grant, to Mussoorie is 60-kms away from the place.
