Windamere
Hotel
Darjeeling Windamere
is situated on historic Observatory Hill where Darjeeling began,
and overlooks the Chowrasta, the town's exclusive promenade.
From Observatory Hill, one can glimpse Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal
and Sikkim, against a stupendous backdrop of twenty of the highest
mountain peaks in the world. Windamere,
an enchanting colonial hotel was initially established as a
boarding house around the late 1880's. 'Ada Villa', the Raj
Boarding House, catered to British Tea Planters and others on
contract during this time. It then changed into a hotel just
before the outbreak of the Second World War. During the first
Indian National Awards Ceremony, held in Delhi, in September
of 1994, the Prime Minister presented Windamere with the Award
for Excellence as a Heritage Hotel of India. Rooms
Windamere
hotel is split into two wings: The Windamere and The Little
Windamere. The former, based in the main house called Villa,
is furnished in traditional colonial style with flowery chintz
curtains and a strict embargo on the intrusion of the modern
television or telephone. This wing, whose suites have names
as quaint as their décor, includes a honeymoon cottage, the
House of the Eighth Happiness and Little Peppers. The
Little Windamere has bowed to modern exigencies and while it
retains all the traditional qualities of hospitality, its décor
is more modern and the rooms have televisions and telephones.
. Dining
The
food is legendary, with both Continental and Indian menus. The
Continental cuisine still has remnants of the old Raj with such
dishes as "Roly Poly Pudding", "authentically prepared porridge
for breakfast" and "cheese & onion pie". You can wash this down
with our lovely wines and finish up with a cup of steaming Darjeeling
Tea or freshly ground coffee. During dinner, the dining room
is transformed into a candlelit affair, with soft music floating
around in the ether. White-gloved waiters seem to glide in and
around the tables and soft conversations are flowing Conference
