The Cellular Jail, now declared a national monument, was the prison in which many Indian freedom fighters spent long years in solitary confinement in small cells ( 4 m x 2.7 m ) with a single ventilator. A must visit for everyone.Special attraction - sound and light show.
The Chatham Saw Mill is one of Asia 's oldest sawmills, featuring rare species of timber (such as kokko, chulgam, marblewood and satinwood).
The Anthropological Museum houses models of the habitats of the Paleolithic islanders and their tools and implements.
The Marine Museum displays more than 350 specimens of local aquatic life.
The Cottage Industries Emporium displays a variety of artifacts crafted from mother of pearl and local wood.
Corbyn's Cave is one of the more picturesque beaches, with excellent bathing spots.

Ross Island was once the seat of the British Administration. The Chief Commissioner's residence, modeled on Windsor Castle , now lies in ruins.
Burmah Nallah (17 kms) features lumbering operations aided by trained elephants.
Chidiya Tapu ( Bird Island ) (25 kms), is an ideal picnic site, with its lush green mangroves, picturesque beach and creeks and excellent fishing. True to its name, there is indeed a profusion of tropical birds.
Wandoor Beach (an hours drive) is the right place to go for snorkeling and diving. There are many islands around Port Blair, Viper Island , Neil Island , and Long Island .
Each of these have stretches of lovely sandy beaches and lush green forests.
Mount Harriet
Once the summer headquarters of the Chief Commissioner during British Raj, situated at about 365 meters above sea level. Mount Harriet is the highest peak near Port Blair. One can witness beautiful sunrise and sunset from this place. |

Island Camping
Island camps are just the right choice for the nature-lovers, who wish to enjoy sun sea and the pristine beauty of nature by spending quiet holidays right on the beach. Tents are available on hire at Radhanagar beach in Havelock Island and also at other islands/places at moderate rates from October to May, depending on weather.
Scuba Diving
Andaman waters offer a fascinating world of under water marine life, varieties of colorful fishes, rare coral reefs, mysterious remains of sunken ships etc. All these can be explored through Scuba Diving. Snorkeling
One can enjoy the under-water marine life and view the rarest varieties of corals by snorkeling near the Andaman Water Sports Complex, Corbyn's Cove Tourism Complex, Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park , Havelock and other islands on all days from dawn to dusk depending on weather. Trekking
One can go trekking through the nature trail from Mt. Harriet to Madhuban and enjoy the rare forest life, flora and fauna. There are other trekking routes also.

Foreigners
Foreigners require a permit to stay in the Islands, which can be easily obtained on arrival at Port Blair, from the immigration authorities, for 30 days stay. This can be extended for another 15 days with permission. Permits can also be obtained from Indian Mission overseas, Foreigners Registration offices at Delhi , Mumbai, Chennai and Calcutta and the immigration authorities at the airports at Delhi , Mumbai, Chennai and Calcutta .
Indians
Indian Nationals need no permit to visit Andaman. However, visiting tribal areas of Andaman and Nicobar Districts is prohibited and the Deputy Commissioner, Andaman District, Port Blair against application on prescribed form, grants permits only in exceptional cases.
Permitted places for Night halt are:- South Andaman Island (except Jarwa Reserve), Middle Andaman Island (except Jarwa Reserve), Little Andaman Island (except Jarwa Reserve), Neil Island, Havelock Island, Long Island, Diglipur, Baratang, Island in the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, (excluding Islands - Boat Hobday, Twin, Tarmugli, Malay and Pluto), North Passage Permitted places for Day halt :-
Cinque Island, Ross Island, Narcondum Island, Interview Island, Brother Island, Sister Island, Barren Island - can be visited on board vessels only.

Shipping Corporation of India operates ships between Chennai - Port Blair and Kolkata ( Calcutta ) - Port Blair. From Chennai to Port Blair, ship journey would take approximately 60 hours and from Kolkata ( Calcutta ) to Port Blair 66 hours. Monthly shipping schedules are available with Shipping Corporation of India offices at Chennai/ Kolkata ( Calcutta )/ Bangalore . The ships start return journey from Port Blair 3 to 4 days after reaching there. The date of departure of the ship is announced in the newspapers one week prior to departure. The sale of ship journey tickets starts only after the firm date of Arrival of the ship is announced in the newspapers. |
